I had the pleasure of being invited to a Zomato meet up in Flash Harry’s. I hadn’t heard a lot about Flash Harry’s and google didn’t provide too many links so wasn’t sure what to expect.
It was UNREAL. I can’t praise this place enough. The food was absolutely fantastic. It’s a mixture of classic American dining with asian and street food. We were treated to all of the starters which included Asian BBQ Beef Short Rib, Flash Harry’s Hot Wings, Gunpowder Prawns, Giant Onion Rings, Guacamole Tortilla Chips, Popcorn Chicken and Seasoned Pork Scratchings.
My absolute favourite has to be the Asian BBQ Short Rib – 16 hour slow cooked ribs with green onions & hoisin aioli. You know when you hear people say “it fell off the bone”? I’m always skeptical of this. Like HOW does it “fall off the bone”? Well let me tell you, this fell off the god damn bone. It was savage. There wasn’t a scrap of it left. Everyone loved it. I’m not even a massive fan of slow cooked beef (or hoisin) but this has converted me. When I go back I’ll 100% be getting this.
Flash Harry’s Hot Wings – I’m a huge lover of wings. These did not disappoint. Very similar to the Tribeca and Elephant & Castle Wings. Succulent, juicy and plenty of sauce.
Gunpowder Prawns – with Chipotle Chili Mayo on Grilled Sourdough. When I read the menu first my eyes instantly were directed towards these. Prawns – love them. Chipotle – Can’t get enough of it. Another winner with me. The prawns were huge. About twice the size (if not bigger) than regular prawns. They come with the shells which I know some people aren’t a fan of but the shell was easily removed and they were delicious. Another one I’ll be ordering again.
Guacamole Tortilla Chips – 16 Hour Pulled Pork, Smoked Chipotle Salsa, Sour Cream, House Pickled Jalapeños & Cheddar. What a monster portion of chips. Holy hell. How do you even start eating something like this? Everyone’s doing pulled pork everything lately and TBH I’m kind of sick of it. The pulled pork you are usually served is pretty bland and often feels like it’s been microwaved. Not with these bad boys. No, this was incredibly tasty and I could tell a lot of time and effort had gone into preparing the pork. The pickled Jalapeños are pickled on site and they have the jars on show in the kitchen. Another dish I’d be getting again. You couldn’t possibly eat this on your own. It’s one for sharing.
Popcorn Chicken – Spiced Fried Chicken with Jalapeño Aioli. This is the only dish I probably wouldn’t order again. I just don’t get popcorn chicken. I like popcorn, I like chicken but I don’t like the two together. The chicken was gorgeous though and if I could just order a portion of that on it’s own I would. Everyone else loved this.
Seasoned Pork Scratchings – Five Spice & Orange Salt. Well, didn’t some fool only go and put these right in front of me. Rookie mistake. I ate them all. I knew there was something missing in my life but I’ve found it now. It’s orange salt. How have I never had orange salt before?
Now onto the mains. Again we got a selection of their mains. Forgive me if I can’t remember everything we got. There was a serious selection of food. I don’t think I got a picture of everything so I’ll just talk about what I have pictures of.
Hot As Hell Chicken – Free Range Irish Chicken Soaked in Buttermilk for 24 Hours. Can’t go wrong with buttermilk chicken. We had both the Hot As Hell and Southern Fried. Again this would be something you’d have to share. The portion is huge. The skin was crispy and the chicken was juicy. Not the easiest thing to eat but worth the effort!
9oz Feather Blade Steak – Cooked on Himalayan Hot Salt Stones. This was another thing on the menu that my eyes were drawn towards. I love the not so standard cuts of steak (Rosary from Bear being my favourite) and anyone that knows me knows that I am a massive lover of Himalayan Salt. I tend to eat it out of the palm of my hand. I’m pretty sure in 20 years time when I’m on my death bed and I’m told it was the ridiculous amount of Himalayan Salt that’s put me there I’ll still say “I REGRET NOTHING!”. The steak arrives medium rare but closer to the rare side and continues cooking on the hot salt stone. If you like your steak rare you take it off straight away, if you like it cooked more you leave it there. I thought it was a pretty cool concept. As I’ve said before I like my steak pretty rare and LP likes his more on the medium side so something like this would be perfect if you wanted to share a steak but each wanted it cooked a different way.
Hen Pecker – 50/50 Patty, Hens Egg, Peanut Butter, Brown Sugar & Glazed Bacon. Flash Harry’s do 50/50 patties which are 50% beef and 50% bacon which makes them very moist. They’ve a selection of 10 burgers on the menu. The Hen Pecker was lovely. The peanut butter, bacon and egg really worked well together and was something different to a usual bacon and egg burger.
The Black Monk – Cajun Seasoned Monkfish, Thick Caper & Bacon Mayo, White Cheddar, Shredded Cabbage & a Wedge of Grilled Lime. When looking at the selection of burgers this caught my eye. I’ve never had a fish burger before and was interested in trying it. Not going to lie, I was 100% convinced it was chicken because the monkfish was so meaty. Loved the combination of cheese and fish and the cajun seasoning worked really well. Another thing I’ll be ordering again.
Lets talk fries. Flash Harry’s has 7 different types of fries. Yes, 7. 3 house, 4 dressed. Skin on fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Flash Crinkle Cut Fries, Chilli Beef Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Beef Drip Gravy Skin on Fries, and Swine Fries. There’s a special place in my heart for the Beef Drip Gravy Fries. They have truffle aioli, bacon salt & mozzarella and I can tell you this: I’ll be getting them again and I won’t be sharing.
My next favourite were the Swine Fries. Skin on Sweet Potato Fries, Pulled Pork, Hoisin Aioli, chilli, Five-spice & Orange Salt. The pulled pork is the 16 hour pulled pork I talked about earlier. Maybe I’d share these.
Sweet Potato Fries – Harissa Yogurt, Salted Seeds & Shaved Parmesan. These reminded me of the sweet potato wedges I had in Cotto. I love the combination of harissa yogurt, seeds and parmesan with sweet potato.
Chilli Beef Fries – 16 Hour Beef Brisket, Jalapeños, Cheddar Cheese, Creme Fraiche, pickled chillies. Ok, these ones you’d have to share. There’s a lot of eating in them.
Last but not least, the broccoli. Char Grilled Broccoli with Buttermilk Aioli. As a massive lover of all things broccoli these were spot on.
I almost forgot about the cocktails. Flash Harry’s have recently started doing cocktails. I forgot to take a picture of the menu so only know the name of the cocktail I had which was the Hubba Bubba. It was fruity, creamy and not too sweet. I could easily have drank these all night.
Can’t remember the name of this cocktail but know that it’s a bourbon based cocktail.
Overall the food was great. Flash Harry’s is a pretty cool spot and has a nice vibe to it. Whether you’re just going for a few drinks after work and a small bite to eat or for a full meal and I’d highly recommend going. Huge thank you to Zomato and Flash Harry’s for inviting me.
Would I go back? Will more than likely go this weekend.
What didn’t I like? It’s so far away from me. I want it closer so I can have the beef drip fries and the Asian beef short rib every day.
I went back to Flash Harry’s and was really let down. Those beautifully presented dishes I was given on my first visit were no more. What I was given tasted ok (not half as nice as the first time), the portions were a lot smaller and the food looked like it was just thrown on a plate with no effort or thought. The stunning copper pots? They must have only been for the night because all our fries were served in white bowls. I reached out to Flash Harry’s to ask them what the deal was and they said they’d get back to me. That was 6 months ago and I never got an answer. So don’t bother going unless you want to be let down.
